The AI Art Index

Are the artists AI talks about the ones the market values? We are measuring it.

Pilot in progress. First findings November 2026.

The question

Collectors, curators and journalists now ask AI assistants about art. Who matters. Who to watch. What a body of work means. The answers shape attention before anyone opens a catalogue or walks into a gallery.

The art market has its own measure of importance: what sells, and for how much. The AI Art Index asks whether the two agree. Where they diverge, we want to know which artists AI overlooks, which it favours, and why.

How it works

  1. 01

    The artists

We start with Artprice's 2025 ranking of the top 100 contemporary artists by auction turnover. It is a public, independent benchmark of market value.

  2. 02

    The questions

We put 200 questions to the AI systems. Half ask for recommendations without naming anyone: the most important living painters, the artists collectors should know. Half ask about each artist by name, to test what the systems know.

  3. 03

    The runs

Every question goes to six AI models, including ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews. We repeat the full set weekly to separate lasting patterns from noise.

What we will publish

  • How closely AI attention tracks market value across the top 100.
  • The artists AI underplays relative to their market, and those it amplifies.
  • Differences between models. They do not all agree.
  • Patterns by gender and region.
  • A full methodology note, so others can test our work.

The pilot reports in November 2026. From 2027 the index runs annually.

Questions

Why auction turnover?
It is public, comparable and independent of us. It is also incomplete. It misses the primary market and artists who rarely sell at auction. We will say where that matters.
Which AI systems do you test?
Six models, including ChatGPT, Gemini, Google's AI Overviews and Grok. All runs use UK English.
Can I see results for a particular artist?
Not yet. We publish the pilot as a whole first. If you represent an artist, we can run a private report on how AI describes them.
Will the index rank artists?
It measures attention, not quality. AI visibility is a signal worth understanding. It is not a verdict on the work.
Who is behind it?
FRAME PR, an art communications studio working across press, search and AI.
