A large still life by Ella Kruglyanskaya: a black two-spouted pot on a checked cloth, painted as an image set within the canvas rather than filling it.

About the artwork

A black pot with two spouts and a gold-rimmed lid stands on a pink, red and yellow checked cloth. Behind it, the pale shadow of a jug falls across a grey wall. The pot is solid and glossy; the jug exists only as its shadow.

The image fills only part of the canvas. A broad cream border runs down the left side and along the top and bottom, so the still life reads as something placed on the surface: a page, a print, a picture of a picture.

The checked cloth carries the graphic energy of Kruglyanskaya's figure paintings, where clothing and textiles do much of the work. Here the pattern runs to the edge of the image and stops, drips and all. (Tate)
