What Frieze London is
Frieze London is a contemporary art fair for living artists. It opened in 2003 and still sets the tone for the autumn season. Frieze Masters, its sister fair about 15 minutes' walk away across the park, covers historical and modern work.
Frieze Sculpture links the two. It is a free outdoor show in the English Gardens at the south end of the Broad Walk.
What is new in 2026
Frieze London adds The Code Universe, a curated section organised by Carol Yinghua Lu. Artists include Carolyn Lazard, Selma Selman and Shinro Ohtake.
Focus, the section for younger galleries, has 34 presentations. Artist-to-Artist returns for its fourth edition with seven solo presentations. Emerging artists and younger galleries now sit closer to the entrance.
At Frieze Masters, Queering Modernism looks at visual languages of the 20th century, conceived by Anke Kempkes. Spotlight returns, curated by Devika Singh and Sofia Gotti of the Courtauld Institute of Art.
The market going in
Collectors arrive at Frieze 2026 cautious but buying. In his note Ahead of Frieze: Confidence in a Selective Market, collector Joseph Clark points to the Art Basel and UBS Art Market Report 2026: global sales rose 4% in 2025 to USD 59.6 billion, after two years of decline, and remain below their 2022 peak.
His argument is that headline figures say little about any single work. He sets out three checks before buying: is the price right for this particular work, what does it add to the collection, and can the buyer carry the full cost of ownership, from framing and shipping to insurance and storage. Works on paper, he suggests, are one way into an artist at a lower budget.
For exhibitors, a selective market means collectors want the case for each work, not just the work. Galleries that supply clear context, exhibition history and provenance make that case easier to make, in the booth and when the collector looks the artist up afterwards.
The week around it
Frieze week fills London. 1-54, the contemporary African art fair, runs at Somerset House from 15 to 18 October 2026, with its press and VIP preview on the 15th. Commercial galleries across Mayfair and east London open their strongest shows of the year.
For exhibitors, that means competition for the same press, the same collectors and the same afternoon. Plan around the preview days, not the public days.
Before the fair
If you are showing this week, most of the work is done. Three things still pay off in the last 24 hours:
- One bio per artist, word for word the same on your website, the fair's exhibitor profile and the press release. Mixed versions confuse journalists and AI systems alike.
- Images with full captions: artist, title, year, medium, dimensions, courtesy line. Captioned images get used. Uncaptioned ones get cropped or credited wrongly.
- A booth page on your own site: artists, works, booth number, contact. It gives press and collectors one link, and gives search engines a page that ties your gallery to the fair.
During and after
The first fortnight after Frieze is when sales reports, reviews and round-ups appear. It is also when the record of who showed what gets written.
- Add the fair to each artist's exhibition history on your site within a week: Frieze London 2026, gallery name, section.
- Send a short follow-up to every journalist who visited the stand, with captioned images and the booth page link.
- Publish a post-fair note on your site: what you showed, who acquired (with permission), what comes next. Fresh, specific pages are what AI answers cite.
How AI describes the artists on your stand
Collectors and advisers now research artists in ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI answers before and after Frieze. Established names get confident, accurate summaries. Mid-career and emerging artists often get thin answers, the wrong medium, or a different person with the same name.
Test it yourself. Ask two or three AI assistants who each artist on your stand is, what they make and where they have shown. Note what is missing or wrong. That gap is what a collector sees when they look the artist up on the train home.
We are measuring this at scale in The AI Art Index, our study of how AI talks about contemporary artists. If you represent artists showing at Frieze, we can run a free report on how AI describes them.
