About the artist

Anthea Hamilton was born in London in 1978 and lives and works there (Tate). She studied at Leeds Metropolitan University, graduating in 2000, and at the Royal College of Art, graduating in 2005 (Thomas Dane Gallery). Her work begins with research into subjects such as art nouveau design, the roots of 1970s disco or lichen, and she has spoken of the influence of Antonin Artaud's call for a 'physical knowledge of images' (Tate).

She was one of four artists shortlisted for the 2016 Turner Prize, nominated for her exhibition Lichen! Libido! Chastity! at SculptureCenter, New York (Tate). At Tate Britain she restaged that show, including Project for a Door (After Gaetano Pesce), a large sculpture of a backside based on a photograph of a model by the Italian designer Gaetano Pesce (Tate).

In 2017 she became the first black woman to be awarded the commission for Tate Britain's Duveen Galleries (Wikipedia). Her solo exhibitions include The Squash at Tate Britain and The New Life at the Secession, Vienna, both in 2018, The Prude at Thomas Dane Gallery, London, in 2019, and Soft You at Fondazione Memmo, Rome, in 2025 (Thomas Dane Gallery). The Joseph Clark Collection holds GHR4 (2026), a C-type print she made in collaboration with Delphine Gaborit and Lewis Ronald (Joseph Clark Collection).
