About the artist

James Shaw is a London-based designer who makes objects and furniture, and is best known for his work with recycled plastics and the self-built extruding gun that produces his blobby, baroque forms (Domaine de Boisbuchet). He graduated from the Royal College of Art's MA Design Products course in 2013 with Making Guns, a set of weapon-like design tools, one of which pumps out recycled plastic. The resulting Plastic Baroque series uses discarded post-consumer plastic, and his practice has since taken in metal and wood (Wallpaper*).

His studio makes Blob lamps from recycled polypropylene, and in August 2023 it showed Strange Friends, a vitrine of eight tabletop objects combining different materials, at Hauser & Wirth Mayfair (James Shaw). He has been nominated for the Design Museum's Designs of the Year award and won the Arc Chair Design Award, and his work is in the permanent collections of MoMA, the V&A, the Montreal Museum of Art, Design Museum Gent and the Museum of London (James Shaw).
