About the artist

Tim A Shaw is an artist based in London, born in 1982 (Saatchi Art). He grew up in Kent (Hospital Rooms) and graduated from Central Saint Martins with a BA in Fine Art in 2005 (SHOWstudio). He began working in the arts as an art technician and ran his own art installation company for ten years, and his own work includes installations, light sculptures and paintings (Hospital Rooms).

In 2016 he and curator Niamh White founded Hospital Rooms, a charity that aims to improve the wellbeing of mental health service users by enhancing hospital environments with art, design and creative activity (SHOWstudio). Its first project was at the Phoenix Unit at Springfield University Hospital in London, with artists including Gavin Turk and Nick Knight (SHOWstudio), and the charity has since commissioned more than 100 site-specific artworks (Jameel Arts & Health Lab). Hospital Rooms lists both founders as MBE (Hospital Rooms).

He also co-founded Making Time Arts, a social enterprise that delivers arts training to professional dementia caregivers (Saatchi Art), and the Dentons Art Prize (Tim A Shaw). His exhibitions include Hospital Rooms shows at Southampton City Art Gallery and the South London Gallery Fire Station (Tim A Shaw). His book Draw & Be Happy, a set of drawing exercises inspired by art-therapy techniques, was published in the UK by Ilex Press in 2018 (Hachette UK).
