Dana Schutz was born in 1976 in Livonia, Michigan, and lives and works in Brooklyn, New York (Wikipedia). She took her BFA at the Cleveland Institute of Art and her MFA at Columbia University, New York (David Zwirner). She first came to attention in 2002 with the exhibition Frank from Observation, built on the idea of Schutz as the last painter and Frank as her last subject (Wikipedia).

Her paintings often show figures in invented, impossible or enigmatic situations, and she also makes sculpture (David Zwirner). Her first solo museum exhibition was at the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art in Overland Park, Kansas, in 2004, and Dana Schutz: The Visible World was shown at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark and the Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris in 2023 (David Zwirner). She has been represented by David Zwirner since 2020 (David Zwirner). Her work is held by the Museum of Modern Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, among others (Wikipedia).

Schutz has made monotypes and etchings at the New York print studio Two Palms since 2012, and the Cleveland Museum of Art acquired her etching series Strangers (Two Palms). The Optometrists (2025), the drypoint in the Joseph Clark Collection, is a 24 by 24 inch print on Arches En Tout Cas paper in an edition of 20 (Two Palms). David Zwirner lists an oil painting of the same title from 2024 (David Zwirner).
