About the artist

Roberta Vilić is a Croatian painter, born in Banja Luka in 1971, whose family comes from Uskoplje in Bosnia and Herzegovina. She attended the School of Applied Art and Design in Zagreb and graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Zagreb in 1998 in the class of Zlatko Keser. She has exhibited since 1992, with solo shows in Zagreb, Split and Korčula among other places and group shows in Ljubljana, Turin and Mainz, and won first prize at Grisia in Rovinj in 2009 (Croatian Wikipedia). She is a member of the Croatian Association of Artists (HDLU), and has won three prizes for painting and a commendation for printmaking (HDLU).

The HDLU describes her work as stressing the materiality of the painted surface, with diagrams, traces, signs, cuts and letters emerging from reduced, almost monochrome compositions, and stylised printer's type among her means (HDLU). Her exhibition From the box at Mošćenička Draga combined prints titled Hommage to Malevich, built on the circle, square, rectangle and cross, with small dated works on paper made daily and stored in a box (Mošćenička Draga Tourist Board). In 2022 Poetic Reminiscences at the Fonticus City Gallery in Grožnjan joined collage, scraping, layering and writing, drawing on the poetry of Alexander Blok and Innokenty Annensky (Akademija Art).
