About the artist

Yukako Shibata was born in Otaru, Hokkaido, Japan, in 1972 (Ben Uri Research Unit; Artsy) and has lived and worked in London since 1993 (Yukako Shibata). She took a BA in Fine Art at the City & Guilds of London Art School (1995 to 1998), a postgraduate diploma at Byam Shaw School of Art and an MA in Painting at the Royal College of Art (2002 to 2005) (Yukako Shibata, CV).

She describes her work as a hybrid of sculpture, painting and installation, built on colour, light and reflection: some painted surfaces are hidden so that only their reflected colour is seen (Yukako Shibata). Her solo exhibitions include Luminescence at the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation in London (2008), Colour Shadow at the Lightgallery in London (2013) and Ethereal at Gallery MoMo in Tokyo (2014) (Yukako Shibata, CV), her first solo show in Japan (Time Out Tokyo).

Her work is in collections including the Royal College of Art Collection, the Tim Sayer Collection (bequeathed to The Hepworth Wakefield), Doris Lockhart Saatchi and Crédit Agricole Corporate & Investment Bank (Yukako Shibata). For the arts and mental health charity Hospital Rooms she made De-escalation Room (2019) at Bluebird House (Hospital Rooms), an adolescent mental health unit in Southampton (Yukako Shibata, CV).
